Dog training tips: how to stop dog barking

Different ways to train your dog not to bark and how they work.

Dogs are one of the most popular pets in the United States.

With dogs come many trials and also much joy.  One of the most frequently complained about problems that come with a dog is their bark.  A dog’s bark can not only be disruptive, but it can be very nerve-racking for the owner and everyone in hearing range.  There are several ways to teach a dog not to bark.

One of the most popular ways to train a dog not to bark is a bark collar.  These collars are fitted with mechanisms that react to a dog’s bark in a way that disturbs the dog and stops it from barking.  There are several types of these collars.

The first type is a shock bark collar.  This bark collar has a unit attached to it with metal pegs that make constant contact with the dog’s neck.  The unit is run by batteries.  When the dog lets out a bark, the speaker on the unit picks it up and sends a small shock to the dog through the metal pegs.  Eventually, the dog associates barking with the shock and will not bark.  This type of collar is considered inhumane by many.

The second type is a citronella bark collar.  These collars also contain a small unit run by batteries with aerosol citronella inside of it.  When the dog barks, the speaker picks it up and emits a quick spray of citronella under the dog’s nose.  The citronella serves several purposes and attacks several of the dog’s senses.  They are affected by the smell, sound, and sight of the citronella and eventually figure out that not barking will get rid of these things.  This is a more humane version of the bark collar.

The third type is also more humane.  These collars either have a unit on the dog’s collar that will emit a supersonic sound (only heard by dogs) when the dog barks or they have tabletop units that react to the dog’s bark.  The tabletop version is a good choice for multi-dog families.

Another way to at least help with your dog’s barking is by enrolling your dog in obedience classes.  These classes cover the basics, such as sit, stay, down, come, etc. but they also cover other topics as well.  Obedience classes will aid you in teaching your dog not to do several bad habits which include jumping up on people and barking.  This method alone will not completely stop the barking, but it should at least help lessen it.

As a last resort for those who can not tolerate the barking and nothing else is working, some people chose to have their dog debarked.  This requires a veterinarian to perform surgery on the dog removing its voice box so that it is incapable of barking.  This is not a highly recommended procedure, but it has been done and should only be done in extreme cases under the advice of a veterinarian.

When a dog barks at inappropriate times or even too often, it can be a frustrating experience for any dog owner.  This is why there are several different options to help an owner train their dog not to bark.  Careful research should be done before deciding which method is right for you and your dog and sometimes a combination can be just the trick.
